SUPER Cups

The SUPER cup was created in 2013. The cup has embedded horizontal lines that accurately measure 1.5 ounces of hard liquor, 5 ounces for wine, and 12 ounces for beer -- reflecting standard drink sizes in the United States. The cup also has a vertical line for EANABs (equally attractive non-alcoholic beverages) with an infinity symbol. So, the cup is inclusive for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. The cup has been a staple on the Row for many years and is quite popular with students. 

Over the years, the cup has gone through some updates and the most recent iteration highlights how the cups is reusable, industrial dishwasher safe, and recyclable. Cups are regularly distributed to Row houses and can be picked up by appointment at SUPER in Rogers House. Email alcohol@stanford.edu to make a request and appointment.

Research

In 2013, the cup was tested in a Stanford lab. Participants, wearing goggles that mimicked moderate and severe intoxication levels, were asked to pour fluid into a clear control cup and the SUPER cup. Results showed that under moderate impairment, the SUPER cup outperformed the control in accuracy of pouring a standard drink. Under severe intoxication, participants were sadly inaccurate in pouring into any cup, thus showing that people who are severely intoxicated should probably stop drinking.
