Psychiatry Training at CAPS

Main content start

The psychiatry training experience at Stanford Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) aims to provide psychiatry fellows and residents with a systems understanding of mental health care in a university setting.

2023-24 Neighborhood Decorative Accent Line

The training experience places an emphasis on recognizing how treatment fits within an individual’s identities and intersections of identities, in line with the greater mission of CAPS.   The rotation provides comprehensive training in college mental health in psychiatric assessment, brief therapy, group psychotherapy, consultation, case management, and medication management.  Psychiatry trainees will strengthen their abilities to coordinate with various campus partners to aid the provision of the most effective care.  Psychiatry trainees can expect to work with undergraduate and graduate students on concerns that may range from developmental stage of life changes to acute psychiatric conditions.

At CAPS, fellows and residents will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team made up of social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychology interns, and post-doctoral fellows. A CAPS rotation fosters teamwork and provides exposure to theoretical perspectives and intervention approaches across disciplines. There are also opportunities for campus outreach for those trainees with interest.
