Laboratory

Vaden’s lab staff collects specimens (e.g., blood, urine, stool) that are then sent out for analysis. An order from a health care provider is required.

How Billing for Vaden Lab Orders Works

If your provider orders a lab test (or tests) for you, you can choose to use the lab/draw station at Vaden or you can go elsewhere to have your specimen collected. If collected at Vaden, your specimen(s) will be sent out to Quest Diagnostics or to Stanford Health Care (SHC) Laboratory for analysis. As part of this process, because the charges for the analysis will be directed to your health insurance, Vaden will need to collect/confirm your health insurance information.

If you have Cardinal Care health insurance, Quest and/or SHC will directly bill Cardinal Care (Aetna Student Health) for the cost of the analysis performed. You should have no out of pocket cost for the analysis if the test(s) ordered is medically necessary.

  • analysis for specimens collected for sensitive testing (STIs, HIV, etc.) will be billed to Cardinal Care, but because you, the student, are the guarantor on the account, your information will remain private.

If you have alternative health insurance coverage, you will need to engage with the front lobby desk staff to provide your health insurance information. Vaden will then provide it to Quest and/or SHC for billing purposes.

Note: If you subsequently receive a bill for laboratory analysis from Quest or SHC, please follow instructions on the invoice. If your insurance has not yet been billed, you may need to provide your insurance information directly to the sender. Or, the invoice may be for a copay or coinsurance owed for the analysis. We are unable to tell you how much your out of pocket cost, if any, will be if you have private insurance.

  • analysis for specimens collected for sensitive testing (STIs, HIV, etc.) will be billed to your private insurance. Typically, such testing will show as ‘Diagnostic Laboratory’ or some similarly generic term on any bill issued, but if you have a concern, please contact Quest or SHC directly.
