More About Harm Reduction

The spirit of harm reduction is meeting individuals wherever they fall along the spectrum of substance use, recognizing that our relationship to substances is neither linear nor stagnant. SUPER aims to provide harm reduction tools tailored to our community in line with our larger harm reduction approach which includes 5-SURE Safe Rides, 5-SURE on Foot, Cardinal Recovery and The PEERs (link to each of these).

The history of our harm reduction supply program: SUPER (formerly OAPE) created the SUPER cup in 2013.  Since then we have given out thousands of cups per year! In an effort to support students hosting parties, we also began handing out free wristbands as part of the party planning process. Our newest addition to the Harm Reduction Supply Program is Stanford CO-OP (Campus Opioid Overdose Prevention) founded by students in 2020. CO-OP focuses specifically on supplies that help prevent opioid overdoses including Naloxone (brand name: Narcan) and Fentanyl Testing Strips (FTS).

The Supplies

SUPER Cups

SUPER Cups have embedded vertical lines that accurately measure 1.5oz hard liquor for a measured drink, 5 oz for wine and 12oz for beer - all US standard alcohol measured drinks.  The cup also has a horizontal line for EANABs (equally attractive non-alcoholic beverages) with an infinity symbol.  So, the cups are inclusive for drinkers and non-drinkers alike.

Wristbands

SUPER provides wristbands for student registered and approved parties.  Wristbands can be used to designate who is 21 years of age or older and/or to determine who has been allowed into the party.

Narcan

Narcan Nasal Spray (naloxone) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose emergency with signs of breathing problems and severe sleepiness or not being able to respond. To date, over 1000 Stanford affiliates have been trained and carry Narcan on campus.

  • By our Standing Order provided by the state, you must participate in a Narcan training before we can give you Narcan.
  • Once you have completed the training, you will be able to pick up Narcan from Rogers house during office hour times indicated above.

Fentanyl Testing Strips

Fentanyl test strips (FTS) are a low-cost method of helping prevent drug overdoses and reducing harm. FTS can detect the presence of fentanyl in all different kinds of drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc.) and drug forms (pills, powder, and injectables).

Currently, fentanyl testing strips are handed out at Narcan trainings and are available, no questions asked, at Rogers house for pick up during office hours. You can find them at the base of the stairs in the brochure stand. Please only take what you need to ensure that others’ have access. We refill the stand regularly.
