Cost of Services and Billing Information
For services not covered by the Health Fee (for example, those offered at Vaden Health Center such a Pharmacy, Physical Therapy or Psychiatric medication management, or for care not offered at Vaden Health Center such as inpatient care/hospitalization or emergency care) students will need to use their chosen health insurance to cover the cost.
- Students who chose to remain enrolled in Cardinal Care will want to make Vaden Health Center their first stop, because a service might be covered under the Health Fee AND because a Vaden referral is needed to access specialty care. Detailed information about Cardinal Care benefits, including information about deductibles, copays, and other out-of pocket costs can be found here.
- Students who successfully waived Cardinal Care are also encouraged to seek care at Vaden, but will want to access any needed insurance-covered care according to the terms of their plan. (Please note that the Vaden providers will not be knowledgeable about out of pocket costs for private insurance plans.) As of September 1, 2026, for Primary Care and Mental Health services that are insurance services, Vaden will accept all insurances that Stanford Health Care (SHC) accepts.

Immunizations Quick Overview
The Affordable Care Act, federally enacted legislation, identifies a number of routine, preventive immunizations that must be covered by health insurance. Those listed below are covered by insurance plans at no cost share to members.
If you are a student with Cardinal Care, and you choose to have one of the following immunizations at Vaden Health Center, Wellfleet will be billed for the service and you should have no out-of-pocket expense.
If you are a student with private insurance, and that insurance is accepted by Stanford Health Care, your insurance will be billed for the service and you should have no out-of-pocket expense. If your insurance is not accepted, you can choose to pay up front and then request reimbursement from your carrier. You may also check to see if Walgreens at Vaden is in network with your plan. They may be able to administer the immunization and bill for it. (Be sure to use a provider who is in your private insurance network for the maximum benefit level. If you have Kaiser, or are part of another closed network, you should have your immunizations done through your health plan).

Other Immunizations Available at Vaden
Vaden Health Center offers many vaccines that are not designated as preventive under ACA. Several of the vaccines listed below are recommended for specific travel situations. Coverage for these vaccines can vary between insurance plans. The safest way to determine if a vaccine you are considering will be covered, and at what level, is to contact your insurance company.
If you are a student with Cardinal Care OR private insurance that is in network with Stanford Health Care, and you choose to have any of the following immunizations at Vaden Health Center, your insurance will be billed for the service, however the determination of coverage will be based on a number of variables, one of which is medical necessity.
