Pharmacy

Initial prescriptions written after your visit with a Vaden clinician are most easily filled at the Walgreens at Vaden pharmacy. These prescription orders are entered into your electronic medical record, directed to Walgreens at Vaden and processed by one of the on site pharmacists.

• Medications are typically available shortly after you arrive at the pharmacy window.
• A consultation with the pharmacist takes place whenever a new prescription is filled.

If you are being seen or treated by a non-Vaden provider and want to fill your prescription at Vaden, simply let the clinician know you wish to use the Walgreens at Vaden pharmacy. The clinician will either place the order with Walgreens at Vaden electronically, will call it in, or will provide you with a written prescription to submit in person.

If your prescription order has been sent to the pharmacy (by either a Vaden clinician or a non-Vaden clinician) but you are unable to retrieve your medication in person, you may designate someone to pick it up for you. In preparation, you must contact the pharmacy and authorize a specific person to retrieve a specific prescription. The person you authorize will need to sign for the designated medication and provide any applicable payment at the time of service. 

Walgreens at Vaden hosts a refill hotline at 650.815.2000. For prompt service, call at least one hour before your anticipated pick-up time and leave the following information:

• Your name
• Prescription (Rx) number (if you don't have the Rx number, leave the name of the medication)
• Your daytime phone number
• Desired day and time of pick-up

• If your prescription has run out of refills, and it was written by a Vaden clinician, contact your clinician via secure messaging. In certain instances, he or she may be able to initiate additional refills without seeing you in the clinic.
• If your prescription was written by a non-Vaden clinician, contact that provider and ask him or her to call in a new prescription to the Walgreens at Vaden pharmacy at 650.815.2000.

If your prescription was originally filled at an outside pharmacy and you wish to transfer it to the Walgreens at Vaden pharmacy, please contact Walgreens at Vaden at 650.815.2000, and provide the following information:

• Your name
• Prescription (Rx) number
  • If you don't have the Rx number, leave the name of the medication
• Name and telephone number of the outside pharmacy
• Your daytime phone number
• Date needed

The Walgreens at Vaden pharmacist will call you with any questions and let you know when the transferred prescription is ready for pick-up.

If you are covered by Cardinal Care, the university’s student health insurance plan, you may use the coverage to purchase your medication(s). Please be sure to have your insurance card with you when you come to pick up your prescription. Most prescriptions that are purchased using Cardinal Care will require a co-payment at the time of service.

Generic contraceptives are available with no cost-share to the student (part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, PPACA). Under PPACA, brand-name contraceptives are available with no cost-share when there is no generic equivalent available. If a brand-name contraceptive is preferred and a generic is available, the difference in cost will be charged to the student (cost will be determined at time of service).

Walgreens at Vaden pharmacy is also able to bill most third-party payors. Please be sure to have your insurance card with you when you come to pick up your prescription.

Levonorgestrel emergency contraception pills (generic Take Action)  is available at Walgreens at Vaden. It can be dispensed to either the patient or the partner. Patients can also receive emergency contraception by making an appointment with a Vaden nurse.

• The cost of 'Take Action' varies from $30-$60.
• If Vaden is closed, there are other community options, including:
  • CVS in the Town and Country Shopping Center
  • Walgreens in Mountain View (open 24 hours)
  • Old Union in the All Gender restroom #114 (vending machine). Be sure and check hours.

Ulipristal acetate, known by the brand name ella, is also available at Vaden but requires a prescription. This pill may be more effective than Levonorgestrel pills if more than 72 hours have passed since unprotected sex.

• It should not be used more than once in the same menstrual cycle.
• Ulipristal acetate may reduce the contraceptive effects of regular hormonal contraceptive methods, and you will need to use a reliable barrier method of contraception (i.e. condoms) for the rest of the cycle.
• You should seek immediate medical care if severe stomach or pelvic pain develops, which may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.
