Health Care Information for
Visiting Student Researchers
As a member of the student community at Stanford, your health and well being on campus is Vaden Health Center’s highest priority. Our facility is located at 866 Campus Drive and our on-campus health care resources are extensive.
As a Visiting Student Researcher, we recognize that you may have needs that differ somewhat from matriculated students who will typically be on campus for a longer, more concentrated period of time. Below, we have described some of the health care requirements and options available to you during your time at Stanford.
Campus Health Service Fee
Stanford University charges a mandatory Campus Health Service Fee for students on the main campus. For the 2011-2012 academic year the fee is $173 per quarter (or portion thereof), and it covers most services provided by Vaden Health Center, including primary care medical visits, psychological evaluation and short-term therapy, and health and wellness programs. This charge is captured on your university bill.
Health Insurance for Visiting Student Researchers
To cover the cost of an unforeseen emergency room visit, hospitalization, or specialist consultation, Stanford requires that all students have adequate health insurance.
One way to meet this requirement is through enrollment in our student health insurance plan, Cardinal Care. This comprehensive plan is available to Visiting Student Researchers according to the following blocks of time only (pro-rating or altering the designated periods is not an option):
September through December $1128
January through April $1128
May through August $1128
June through August $846
Initially, because of the requirement for adequate health insurance, students are automatically enrolled in Cardinal Care. However, if you have alternative coverage, such as through a parent’s or spouse’s insurance, you may wish to opt out. The process to opt out of Cardinal Care differs for domestic students and international students.
Domestic students who have comparable health insurance coverage may waive Cardinal Care by providing information about the alternative plan in Axess. The waiver screens are located at https://axess.stanford.edu/.
International students who have health insurance that meets or exceeds minimum standards set by the university may request an exception to Cardinal Care enrollment by having the alternative insurance company complete the Insurance Coverage Certification Form. You’ll find form at http://vaden.stanford.edu/pdf/InsuranceCoverageCertificationForm01.27.11.pdf
Additional information on Cardinal Care, including access to the 2011-2012 benefits overview brochure and to an insurance comparison worksheet for use in your decision process, are available through Vaden’s Insurance and Referral Office. Assistance with identifying short term coverage options to bridge any gaps between arrival date and Cardinal Care coverage periods is also available. Contact the Insurance and Referral Office Manager, Judy Fox, at JKFox@stanford.edu for information.
Health Insurance for Dependents of Visiting Student Researchers
Stanford also sponsors an insurance plan for your dependents (spouse / domestic partner / children). This cost effective preferred provider organization (PPO) plan is offered by Health Net, and is available to dependents of Visiting Students Researchers who are enrolled in Cardinal Care. New students have the option to enroll their dependents in the plan during a defined period when they first arrive at Stanford only. Please contact Vaden’s Insurance and Referral Office at email@example.com for additional information.
